Three Tarot Decks every woman should have

A guide to the three essential types of tarot decks every woman should own: a foundational deck, a companion deck, and a challenger deck for deeper spiritual growth.

In this post, I’m sharing three categories of tarot decks that can enrich your practice, whether you have one deck, a small collection, or an entire library.

This is not about needing more decks.
You don’t need a deck at all, and you definitely don’t need more than one to read personally or professionally.

This is for those of us who simply love tarot.
For those who enjoy choosing the right deck for the right moment.
For those who feel a connection to their tools.

Let’s explore the three categories of decks I believe every tarot lover should consider.

If you prefer watching the video, you can find it  below:

1. The Foundational Deck

The first type of deck is what I call a foundational deck - the “OG” of tarot.

Tarot is one system, but inside it we have different lineages.
The three most studied and referenced are:

• Tarot de Marseille
• Thoth Tarot
• Rider–Waite–Smith

These are the roots.
They are the structure.
They are the reference point for almost everything created after them.

I personally own foundational decks from all three lineages because I love studying the origin of things. After exploring all of them, my soul connected most deeply with the Rider–Waite–Smith system.

Why is a foundational deck important?

• It teaches you the original language of the lineage
• It makes it easier to read most modern decks
• There are endless resources, books, courses, and free content available
• It helps you understand tarot at its roots

If someone is starting their collection, this is where I recommend beginning: with one foundational deck that speaks to your soul.

2. The Companion Deck

The second type is the companion deck - the deck that feels like home.

This is the deck that:

• ignites your intuition
• is easy to read with
• supports any topic or type of reading
• is loving, gentle, and clear
• feels like a safe container

For me, this is Tarot of Mystical Moments.

I can read anything with this deck: relationships, career, shadow work, dreams.
It always feels soft, clear, and familiar.
It tells the truth, but in a way that’s kind and comfortable.

A companion deck:

• is reliable
• is versatile
• gets along with your energy
• can read “everything” without overwhelming you

If you have several decks, find the one that feels like this. If you’re starting a collection, this would be your second addition.

3. The Challenger Deck

The third category is the challenger deck - the one that pulls you out of your comfort zone.

This is the deck that stretches you, awakens something deeper, and brings layers you didn’t expect.

For me, this deck is the Mary-El Tarot.

Years ago, I couldn’t stand it:
• too big
• black borders
• nudity
• overwhelming imagery

I wasn’t ready for it.

Years later, I revisited it and discovered a new edition: smaller, borderless, and easier to work with.

And suddenly… it opened something powerful inside me.

Challenger decks:

• expand your perception
• confront old limitations
• introduce new symbolism
• deepen your intuition
• bring unexpected insight

This is the deck you don’t use lightly.
You use it when you want depth, transformation, and truth.

I don’t use Mary-El for professional readings because I rely on the guidebook - but for personal work, it is extraordinary.

Final Thoughts

These are the three categories I recommend exploring:

  1. A Foundational Deck: the lineage you identify with.

  2. A Companion Deck : your intuitive comfort zone.

  3. A Challenger Deck: your expansion and depth.

If you already have several decks, go look at your collection and see which one fits each category.

Thank you so much for being here, my love.
I deeply value your time and presence.

Lots of love,
Rachel
